Profile

Kihara Njuguna is the Founder and Managing Partner of Kihara Njuguna & Company Advocates and one of the principal architects of the firm’s commercial and institutional practice.

His career has been shaped by an uncommon combination of legal scholarship, commercial practice, institutional leadership and engagement with Kenya’s business community.

Before establishing the firm, Kihara spent thirteen years within the University of Nairobi Law Library, developing the rigorous research foundation that would later become one of the defining characteristics of his legal practice. His work subsequently expanded into complex legal research, legal opinions, advisory briefs, commentaries and reports for governmental and public-benefit institutions.

Following his admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, he founded Kihara Njuguna & Company Advocates in 2007.

Over nearly two decades of practice, Kihara has developed substantial experience in corporate and commercial law, conveyancing, real estate, investment structuring, regulatory advisory, governance and commercial transactions.

Significant commercial experience

Kihara has advised on and handled real estate transactions with an aggregate value exceeding KES 10 billion.

His work has also included facilitating the entry of businesses valued at more than KES 30 billion into the Kenyan market, providing legal guidance around establishment, regulatory requirements, commercial structures, property, governance and the wider environment in which international and domestic businesses operate.

His experience makes him particularly valuable to investors, developers, corporations, family enterprises and international businesses navigating significant transactions or establishing operations in Kenya.

For Kihara, legal advice cannot be separated from commercial reality. A transaction must not only be legally sound; it must work for the client’s wider investment, operating and strategic objectives.

Leadership beyond private practice

Kihara’s career extends well beyond the walls of the firm.

He serves as Company Secretary of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry — KNCCI, placing him within one of Kenya’s most important private-sector institutions and at the intersection of enterprise, investment, trade and public-private engagement.

Through the Chamber, he has participated in initiatives involving government, county governments, development institutions, businesses and investors working to strengthen Kenya’s commercial environment.

Kihara has also served on the Board of Directors of the Nairobi Centre for International Arbitration, where he chaired the Finance and Administration Committee.

His involvement with the Centre placed him within Kenya’s continuing development as a credible jurisdiction for arbitration and alternative dispute resolution.

He additionally serves within Nairobi’s physical and land-use planning framework, bringing together his extensive experience in property law with direct exposure to the institutional and regulatory environment governing development in Kenya’s capital.

A lawyer who understands the environment around the law

Kihara’s perspective is shaped by almost two decades of advising clients and by years of interaction with the institutions that influence business in Kenya.

He understands that sophisticated legal work often sits at the intersection of several considerations: law, regulation, government, capital, property, commercial relationships and long-term business strategy.

That perspective is particularly important for clients undertaking investments, acquisitions, developments, restructurings or market-entry transactions in Kenya and the wider East African region.

Today, he continues to lead Kihara Njuguna & Company Advocates with the principle on which the firm was built:

Understand the law thoroughly. Understand the client’s objective equally well. Then build the clearest route between the two.
